Choral alum supports top vocal students

Megan Guillory-Bourge, left, a former vocal student at NSU, created several talent-based scholarships for students majoring in vocal performance. She is pictured with recipients Mark Payton, Taylor Arnouville and Leanny Munoz. Not show is Amanda Charles.

NATCHITOCHES – Music has always been a passion for Megan Guillory-Bourge and as a vocalist who attended Northwestern State University, she didn’t realize that the talent that surrounded her there was actually very extraordinary.  Guillory-Bourge, a Lake Charles resident, was among the choral alumni who returned to Natchitoches in January to honor Dr. Burt Allen, a teacher who had a profound impact on her as a voice student.  Guillory-Bourge attended NSU from 2000-2003 as a vocal performance major and played clarinet in the Spirit of Northwestern marching band. Although she transferred to a conservatory in Winchester, Virginia, to complete studies, her heart was at NSU.

“NSU is really where I spent the best part of my time in college,” Guillory-Bourge said. “Dr. Allen was immensely influential in my life.  He is probably the most important teacher I had, even after leaving NSU and going to a bigger school.  He made a huge difference.”

Although she pursued a career path outside music, her desire to reward talented students led to the establishment of four talent-based scholarships to benefit students majoring in vocal performance.  She worked with voice faculty in NSU’s School of Creative and Performing Arts, who auditioned students for the awards. Guillory-Bourge was so impressed with one student, she increased the amount awarded to that individual scholarship.

The scholarship announcement was made during the reunion that honored Allen, who retired last year after 31 years at NSU where he was coordinator of music and director of choral activities. About 75 choral alumni participated in the weekend event, which culminated with a performance by NSU’s Chamber Choir, joined by the alumni.

“As a music major at NSU and then later at the conservatory, I was constantly surrounded by so much talent, that I mistakenly started to believe that it was normal,” she said.   “After hearing another university’s top choir sing, I was made aware of how different and special it is for someone to have a true talent.  I believe that talent can be shaped and refined through training, but never taught and I wanted to reward these students for having such great talent.”

The scholarship recipients are Leanny Munoz of Abbeville, Mark Payton of West Monroe, Taylor Arnouville of Bordelonville and Amanda Charles of Bossier City.  Munoz will receive a scholarship in the amount of $1,000.  Payton, Arnouville and Charles will receive $500 each.  Auditions will be held annually, Guillory-Bourge said.

“I have found that the system often spends more time and money on the lowest performing students and I want these top performers to know that they deserve recognition for being special,” Guillory Bourge said. “I was blown away by the talent I saw in the School of Creative and Performing Arts.  NSU has an excellent program and I am grateful for having had the opportunity to be a part of it.  I’m fortunate to be able to help these kids and I hope the message of my scholarship is understood by them,” she said.

Munoz is a Louisiana Scholars’ College student majoring in liberal arts with a concentration in fine and performing arts.  She intends to pursue an advanced degree and study musicology and/or vocal performance.

“Studying musicology as a graduate student will not stop me from continuing to develop my instrument and seeking out performance opportunities. No matter where my road may wander I know it will never stray from singing,” Munoz said. “This scholarship from Mrs. Guillory-Bourge is a blessing because it will help me travel to my audition and interview for graduate school without cutting into my budget and in the long-term it will help me save money for relocating to wherever my graduate education may take me. I am very thankful for her generosity and for her support of my vocal studies.”

Payton is a junior music major with a concentration in performance and an emphasis in vocal performance.  He would like to pursue a master’s degree in vocal performance and become certified to teach.

“My ultimate goal is to receive my doctorate's degree in vocal performance and vocal pedagogy, audition for young artist and full opera programs, teach voice lessons and become a world renown vocal pedagogue,” Payton said.  “Receiving this scholarship means a great deal to me. For me, it was a defining moment that I am doing what I love, and that performing is life I am meant to live. It also means that someone outside of the walls of CAPA sees that I have potential to do something amazing with my talent.”

Arnouville is a junior majoring in music business with a concentration in voice.

“I plan to get a master’s degree in composition after I earn my undergraduate degree in music business in hopes of becoming a film composer,” Arnouville said.  “This scholarship will help me pay for textbooks as well as equipment needed for composing.”

Charles is a native of Bay City, Texas, and grew up in the Houston area.  She moved to Austin, Texas at age 18 and had a daughter at age 20. She now lives in Bossier City and commutes 1-1/2 hours to Natchitoches.

“Having my daughter changed everything in my life,” she said. “She's the reason why I go to school everyday and just keep pushing forward.” In addition to caring for her daughter, Charles has a full-time job while pursuing her degree in music performance and music education.  Her desire is to be a professional opera singer.

“I would love to get to travel a little bit, join a young artist program and be a music teacher later on in life,” she said. “This scholarship will help out a lot. It's a struggle to pay for all the gas to get to  school and back. Just being recognized to get this scholarship will help me emotionally. I feel honored to have been chosen for this. It just gave me a huge boost of confidence that maybe I can actually do this. I was very moved.”

“These kids are special and when you are surrounded by this kind of talent every day you don’t realize how special it is,” said Guillory-Bourge.

“This scholarship helps defer the cost of school for this semester so that I can keep learning about what I love, which is voice, and gives me more of a drive to stay in the practice room to make sure I am performing at my highest level,” Payton said.  “I am so honored that an alumna of Northwestern State University's School of Creative and Performing Arts decided to invest in this current generation of musicians and artists, continues to see the very best that CAPA has to offer and brings an awareness that the arts are still alive.”

Mural ribbon cutting Feb. 17

$

NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University will hold a ribbon cutting to introduce the campus’s newest public art piece, a mosaic tile wall adjacent to the Sylvan Friedman Student Union.  The ribbon cutting will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17.

Creation of the mural involved not only faculty and students in NSU’s Fine + Graphic Arts program, but also youngsters from area schools who were invited to place pieces on the mosaic during its assembly.

Students and faculty in Fine + Graphic Art designed the mural and began making tile last August. NSU’s School of Creative and Performing Arts and the Cane River National Heritage Area enlisted the aid of ceramic artist Mark Derby of New Orleans to help with the tiled mural.  Derby’s work is recognizable throughout New Orleans and Louisiana as his shop, Derby Pottery, manufactures the iconic blue and gold letter tiles that mark street names on many curbs and sidewalks in New Orleans.

“Mark provided three workshops for art faculty and students to help us progress through this multi step process,” said Leslie Gruesbeck, assistant professor of art.  “CRNHA also provided funding to purchase from Derby Pottery the letter tiles which spell out the line from our Northwestern State alma mater.”  Other sponsors include Home Depot, Pat Williams Construction and Creative Carpets, all of whom provide necessary materials, and Coca-Cola who purchased some supplies and are providing tables for the courtyard area that faces Sam Sibley Drive.

The mural also includes commercially prepared tile, handmade tile, bottles and mirrored tiles.  About 75 students from NSU Elementary Lab, NSU Middle Lab, Natchitoches Magnet, the Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts and Bossier Parish Community College worked alongside NSU students and faculty to manufacture tiles and install the finished work.

“The theme of the mural focuses on the beauty of the natural world on our campus – part of our hope was to extend the beauty of the green areas on campus to this very hard concrete area,” Gruesbeck said.

“I tell my students that they will get to work with and be among some of the greatest nursing scholars and leaders in the world,” Kyzar said.  “I sat across the table with people from Japan, Wales, Lebanon and Australia and listened to their stories about what they are experiencing in healthcare and I share those stories with my students.  It helps nursing really come alive for them.”

C100 present fiscal policy framework at NSU strategy session

$

Committee of 100 CEO Michael Olivier, left, discussed a framework for fiscal reform C100 developed to address the state’s staggering budget deficit during a strategy meeting at Northwestern State University. Featured speakers also included Rep. Julie Stokes and Dr. Jim Richardson, seated.

NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University hosted the Committee of 100-Louisiana for a strategy session Tuesday to discuss a framework for solving the state’s abysmal budget shortfalls.  The group presented a menu of options to close the current $750 million deficit for 2015 and projected $1.9 billion shortfall for 2016 with ideas that reflect a need for prudent tax reform and probable increases in income, sales and gasoline taxes.  The state will have to adopt short- and long-term measures to establish a tax structure that is stable, fair and transparent, but will involve a painful transition era, speakers said.

In opening the forum, attended by local elected officials and business leaders, C100 CEO Michael Olivier said the group is not mandating a single solution, but taking their message around the state to present options and inform the public. C100 worked with The Tax Foundation, a non-partisan research institution, and LSU’s Public Administration Institute to identify areas that could be improved.

“We’ve got a mess and we need to fix it,” Olivier said.  “As a statewide organization, we are focused on these issues. Louisiana does not rank high in tax policy.  We need a revenue stream that has more stability.  We’re creating too much uncertainty.  Businesses hate uncertainty.”

The Committee of 100 Louisiana is a private non-profit whose members include the state’s top chief executive officers of leading private and public companies and presidents of Louisiana’s institutions of higher learning. The group is an advocate for economic development and engages business leaders in influencing public policy issues.

Speaking from a legislative perspective, Rep. Julie Stokes, a CPA from Jefferson Parish who represents District 79 in the House, explained how the state’s deficit snowballed going back to 2005, prior to Hurricane Katrina, the state’s last “normal year,” and discussed a draft of measures proposed by Gov. Jon Bel Edwards.

Stokes said Louisiana’s problems are not just the result of too much spending. When the repeal of the Stelly Plan coincided with the U.S. economic recession, Louisiana dropped lower than other states in tax revenue and has never recovered the gap. Louisiana’s highly complex tax codes, some of which are regressive and outdated, make matters worse. Options to raise revenue include reexamining federal waivers for Medicaid, renegotiating contracts with privatized hospitals and increasing measures to prevent fraud. Stokes suggested that state dollars paid by BP and the state’s Rainy Day Fund could help offset the deep drop in oil revenue and discussed Edwards’ proposed penny sales tax that some argue could hurt consumers.

Those options don’t solve the short-term issues that legislators will have to address in March and consumers could see the 1 cent tax increase as early as March 1, an attempt to generate revenue before the 2015 fiscal year ends.  However, tax increases won’t solve the long-term problem.  Going forward, tax structure reforms can provide significant revenue.

“A well established tax reform plan provides a plan for short-term adjustments and a foundation for long-term economic growth,” said Dr. Jim Richardson, an economist and director of the Public Administration Institute at Louisiana State University.  “As we deal with short-term issues, make sure we do no harm to long-term fiscal reform.  We have to survive this short-term in order to make long-term adjustments.”

Good economic principals are not always popular with politicians, Richardson said, and there are no simple answers.  Most of the state’s problems can’t be fixed immediately and some solutions won’t be realized for years. Tax reform is a multi-year process requiring information, analytics and judgment.

Olivier said C100 plans to present the group’s long- and short-term measures to the Legislature in March.  The group supports higher education in the interest of workforce development and doesn’t believe that deeper cuts to higher ed are the answer.

“An urgent crisis brings opportunity,” Olivier said. “It’s important to use this crisis to streamline, to be fair and transparent and to modernize and be competitive. We want the legislature to know we are standing with them.”

Weinburg coaches to Gold

NATCHITOCHES – A recent graduate of Northwestern State University’s master’s degree program in sports administrations coached two women’s volleyball teams to gold in the Pan American Maccabi Games in Santiago, Chile.

Zach Weinburg, who graduated in December, was invited to be head coach the women’s open and beach volleyball teams for Games, an international multi-sport event held Dec. 26, 2015-Jan. 5, 2016. Maccabi USA endeavors, through sports, to perpetuate and preserve the American Jewish community by encouraging Jewish pride, strengthening Jewish bonds and creating awareness of Israel and Jewish identity. The organization develops, promotes and supports international, national and regional athletic-based activities to provide Jewish athletes from around the world the opportunity to share their heritage and customs in competitive athletic settings.

“Both of my teams won the gold medal, making us the best Jewish volleyball teams of all the Pan-American countries,” Weinburg said.  “We had the opportunity while in Chile to participate in community service projects to benefit the poor of Santiago, we met other Jews from all over the globe and we got to experience international sport with over 3,000 other Jews.”

The United States won the entire competition, totaling 133 medals, of which 56 were gold, Weinburg said.

“It was an unbelievable experience, and I am already looking forward to coaching in the 2017 Maccabiah, which is the Jewish World games consisting of 90 countries from across the globe and is held in Israel. The Maccabiah is the 3rd largest sport event in the world, only lesser in size then the summer and winter Olympiad,” he said.

Weinburg is a native of Voorhees, New Jersey, but lives in Natchitoches. He has been coaching for six years at the high school, club and college ranks and is a full-time assistant volleyball coach at Northwestern State.

Weinburg said that the graduate program at NSU taught him that while almost everyone in the sports industry has the same end goal, there are many different ways to achieve that goal and different ways work best for different people.

“In anything that I do, I have to continue learning so that I can have as many answers as I need once I reach my end goal of becoming a collegiate head coach,” he said.  “I am a firm believer that if you are the smartest person in the room, it is time to change rooms. The day I stop learning is the day I consider retirement. Hopefully that's a long ways away.”

Farhan Malik, left, and Nadejda Vlaeva

NATCHITOCHES – The Louisiana Piano Series International will sponsor a lecture by scholar Farhan Malik Wednesday, Feb. 17 and a recital by pianist Nadejda Vlaeva on Thursday, Feb. 18. Both events begin at 7:30 p.m.

The lecture will be in Room 319B of the A.A. Fredericks Fine Arts Center. Admission is free and open to the public.

Vlaeva’s performance will be in Magale Recital Hall. Tickets are $15. Students are admitted free. Dr. Francis Yang and Dr. Christine Burczyk Allen are the organizers of the Louisiana Piano Series International.

Vlaeva’s playing has been acclaimed wherever she has appeared. Her overwhelming musicality, poetic nature and electrifying virtuosity have garnered accolades from many world-famous musicians.  Lazar Berman called her talent “God-given”; Maestro Hans Graf observed that “her musicality and the depth of her interpretation amazed me,” and Arnold Steinhardt, leader of the Guarneri String Quartet, praised her as “one of those people of extraordinary ability whom we hope for but rarely see.”

Vlaeva has performed as a soloist with orchestras throughout the world, including the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, the Capella Istropolitana in Slovakia, the Edinburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Wroclaw Philharmonic.

She has recorded five internationally released CDs. The most recent, “Bach Transcriptions,” appeared on the British Hyperion label and was selected by BBC Music Magazine as their Instrumental CD of the Month. Its opening track inspired a short animation movie “Ouverture” that premiered in March 2013 at Lincoln Center in New York.  That same track also attracted the attention of Oprah Winfrey, who called it “A musical performance that is almost a dance in itself.” In 2002, she was asked to record soundtrack music for the documentary film "In Search of Cezanne" produced by Academy Award winner Allan Miller. Vlaeva's next CD, Piano Music of Sergei Bortkiewicz, includes some newly discovered works and will be released by Hyperion later this year.

Vlaeva was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, and began playing the piano at the age of five.  At age 15, she won first prize at the Liszt competition in Lucca, Italy. She won the Yamaha Award for the best interpretation of Brahms in Weimar.  Vlaeva lives in New York City where she has performed in the Carnegie Recital Hall, the Rose Hall at Lincoln Center and Merkin Recital Hall.

Malik’s extensive knowledge of historical pianists, piano literature, and the evolution of performance styles has made him a sought after lecturer, writer and critic.  His numerous articles and discographies have appeared in the world’s leading piano journals. His published surveys covering the recorded legacy of specific works have set new standards in the field of criticism.

Malik has studied recorded piano performance from the beginning of the recording era through the present day. He is a serious collector of piano recordings and has amassed a world-class collection of historically important piano recordings.  He has worked with several CD companies on historical pianist projects, including Marston Records with whom he produced the critically acclaimed 3-CD set “The Complete Recordings of Emil von Sauer” and with Philips Classics on their “Great Pianists of the 20th Century” 200-CD edition.
